I've always loved them, but lately, I've started to think deadlifts are ✨ magic ✨. Since I first started lifting, deadlift has always been my movement — I love the simplicity of it, the ease with which the bar can rise when my technique and stance are dialed in, seeing a big number on the bar and knowing I can move it. Over the last year, I did little of it because reasons (gestures to moving boxes, masks, the general situation).

A few weeks ago, I began addressing the fallout from an old ankle sprain with chiropractic/PT. I was worried about training while treating it, so I asked. The unparalleled @doctorwijy told me to listen for bad pain signals but keep going if all felt fine. I finally decided to get back to powerlifting earlier this month. Consistently, after completing my heavy deadlifts, my hips, back, and shoulders feel good — integrated and strong. I'm not setting any PRs, but after feeling disconnection and weakness in my ankle and then across my hips during the early weeks of treatment, I say again: deadlifts may, in fact, be magic. ✨✨✨

I haven't been back (thanks, Coronavirus), and I literally can't go back to where this photo was taken because they closed the airport! 😆 The city keeps moving. So have I, and I love the life I have now in Maryland. But I still miss Berlin. #allthefeels #latergram

This expression is a little enigmatic. You can read a lot of things into it. On this, my 39th birthday, I want you to imagine that the camera isn't in my hand but on a table. The table is bristling with photos, notes, gifts, foods, and momentos from this past year of my life. I'm staring at this buffet and thinking, "How can this all be mine?" And then I dive in to feast and jostle and laugh and wonder and cry and comfort and live, in big and small memories, with my friends and family. I am so grateful for my life, and for all the people who are a part of it. If you're in my life, thank you! If you're not yet, hi! I'm a dork but maybe we can be friends. 😊

Had an impromptu Berlin-style excursion with the husband yesterday: The Walters Art Museum and dinner at Döner Brös. It was honestly amazing. I miss so, so many things about my old home. It was nice to have a couple things back for a few hours. 😌

Throwback to the time I enjoyed a giant charcuterie plate at the top of a mountain and it was chilly and 100% the opposite of my current balmy Mid-Atlantic summer reality. 😩

I want to visit a cold place ASAP. Every year, I get to a point in summer when I feel what most people in the northern hemisphere consider January vibes - I'm sick of this season and I don't want to deal with it anymore. Also, I would like more charcuterie, please and thank you. 🤭 Who's with me?

The last time I saw my grandparents in real life,

The last time I saw my grandparents in real life, I snapped their photo through the car window and my tears. A vice gripped my heart with the thought, "This might be the last time I see them."

A year later Grandma passed. Yesterday, Grandpa followed. Living far from family has always been tough, but no more so than during this pandemic. I know so many people with families spread across the globe. I'm not alone in saying, "this sucks."

Farewell to my grandfather. He was many things to many people on at least two continents, but to me, he was my loving grandfather. No one could tell the stories of my dad's childhood like him. I miss them both and the wonderful home I remember so well. ❤️
